Chinese Inventions Have Resulted in Some Incredible Innovations
The Chinese have long been undermined by the western world as not being well known for their technological accomplishments. However this is completely untrue, and thanks to the efforts of a British philanthropist Joseph Needham the Chinese have been accredited with the discovery of an independent invention of the decimal system, seismological detectors, the blast furnace, gunpowder, paper money, the wheel barrow, paper, printing, the compass, natural gas as a fuel, the rotary fan, the suspension bridge, spaghetti and many more, as well as having made a huge contribution to the fields of medicine, astronomy and logic.
The four most important discoveries by the Chinese which influenced the western world to a huge degree were spaghetti, paper money, chopsticks and whiskey (joke), no they were actually gunpowder, paper and printing and the compass.
The discovery of gunpowder has left a massive impression on the world, but it was not necessarily the only armament that came from the brainstorming of the Chinese. Although gunpowder was discovered by an alchemist who was trying to create the elixir of life for a Chinese Emperor during the Tang Dynasty, it was eventually used in war during the 1281 Mongol invasion of Japan. Chinese also invented a small version of the cannon, the crossbow, cross hair sights, bombs, grenades, rocketry, and a whole cornucopia of other armaments innovations.
Cai Lun, who was a Chinese Eunuch (probably to protect the harem of the Emperor) was the inventor of paper in 105 AD. To my way of thinking paper was a far more important discovery than gunpowder, but then I am a pacifist. Many centuries later in 751 AD Arab captured Chinese Paper makers after the defeat of the Chinese army at the Battle of Talas River and this is how paper making spread to the world.
Originally the compass was invented for religious purposes. When a new house was built the Chinese used a compass to ensure that the house was facing perfectly in harmony with nature. In other words, that it faced true North. The compass started life at a marked wooden circle which balanced a magnetic spoon on the top. We all know what an impact the compass has had on navigation techniques through the centuries.
They used anesthetics as far back as the third century and have been making use of herbal medical remedies since time immemorial. Several skulls dating back to the New Stone Age about 4 000 years ago have been found at sites in Qinghai, Henan and Heilongjiang provinces which indicates that skull operations may have taken place at this time.
We could seriously discuss this subject for a very long time and never get to the end of the inventions the Chinese have been credited with, but I think for now, this will do!
